Vino Con Brio Estate Petite Sirah, Lodi, 2007

Vino Con Brio Estate Petite Sirah, Lodi, 2007

People who love BIG RED WINE have a passion for Petite Sirah, a wine with an incongruous name, since it certainly isn't petite and not quite syrah and probably not even sirah. But while the nomenclature is somewhat confusing, Petite Sirah's ardent fans cheerfully overlook such technicalities and revel in the wine's honest, teeth-staining fruit and robust tannins.

The Bounty Hunter in Napa featured our Petite Sirah it in their fall catalog last year with the following review:

This is what we call a “toothbrush red”, the sort of wine that’s so deeply extracted that merely looking at the glass turns your tongue purple. We’ve never understood how this grape got its name, as there’s nothing “petite” about it. Dark cherry, chocolate and pepper undertones get a spice jolt on the finish from carefully selected oak, and this one is pure purple thunder.

Harvest Date:Hand-harvested October 4, 2007 from the Amorosa Vineyard

Tasting Notes:Pronounced aromas of black pepper, spice and raspberries waft from the glass. Hints of chocolate and plums round out the expansive nose. Flavors follow in the black pepper and plum theme. Full and ripe, the wine is enjoyable without being overdone. Rich in texture, the wine lingers for a smoky full bodied finish. A great match for barbeque, this Petite also works well with stews and intensely flavored fare.
Time In Oak:19 months
Winemakers Notes:Limited production, hand-harvesting, hand-sorting and fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, yielded a wine that displays finesse and extraction. Minimal racking and cellaring were used to allow the wine to mature fully with the nineteen months of barrel aging. Utilizing 40% new French and American oak barrels highlighted the spice characteristics that typify the intense variety.
